Bioethics for the Physician-Scientist (MBS-0225)

This course will cover the following topics: foundations of bioethics including the Nuremburg and Helsinki Codes; scientific misconduct including plagiarism, intellectual dishonesty, fraud, misuse of statistics, and protecting both complainants and respondents; the human treatment of animals in research; mentoring in both the laboratory and hospital, including respect for trainees, harassment issues, developing independence, and the mentor as role model; human volunteers, including informed consent; use of placebos; research on vulnerable populations including children, prisoners, pregnant women and their fetus, military personnel, students, economically/culturally disadvantaged, and the elderly; and stem cell research/cloning/regenerative medicine.
