Music, Emotion, and Therapy in the Stoic Tradition (MUS-0160)

Music in the cultural history of Stoicism from its founding in ancient Greece to present day popular culture. Readings include primary texts in Stoic philosophy from different eras. Analysis of musical examples from diverse genres (such as pop, rock, metal, opera, and rap) with a connection to Stoicism or Stoic themes. Focus on Stoic view of the emotions, the use of music as therapy, and the role of aesthetics in moral formation.
