The Contemporary Landscape (PAI-0080)

Spring 2026 · PAI 0080 · Tufts University · 4 credits · Undergraduate

Examines our relationship to the landscape and its histories. In considering both the geophysical origins and the cultural overlay of human presence, often created over millennia, the landscape reflects a living synthesis of people and place. Painting, Drawing, Land Art and other exercises offer ways to analyze not only the unique places we inhabit, but also their context in relation to ourselves. Projects are inspired by social and political themes and human perception of landscape to express our contemporary world via realism, metaphor and abstraction. One introductory painting course, such as PAI 003, PAI 10, PAI 21, PAIM 52, PAIM 54, or PAIM 93, is recommended to take this intermediate level course. Non-SMFA students will receive a letter grade.
