Introduction to Asian American Studies (RCD-0051)

Histories of East, South, and Southeast Asian migration and settlement in the United States from the late 18th century to the present. Heterogeneous histories, cultural productions, and contemporary issues that shape the field through historical analysis, memoir, art, film, and digital media. Topics include labor migration, community formation, U.S. imperialism, legal exclusion, racial segregation, gender and sexuality, cultural representation, and political resistance. Explores the shifting meanings of “Asian American” over time, employing transnational and diasporic frameworks to situate Asian American history within broader histories of race, gender, and empire.
