Comparative study of seminal writers and works in Russian and Czech satire primarily from the 20th century. Emphasis on techniques, modes, and styles of satire as well as their primary targets, especially Nazism and Communism. Focus on the writer as political voice and public conscience. Readings include Bulgakov, Zamiatin, Capek, Kundera, and others. In English. No prerequisites.
