Diversidad: Identity & Dissent in Modern Spain (SPN-0030)

Exploration of cultural productions that shaped the history of Modern Spain from the 18th century to the present. Interdisciplinary approach to literary texts, films, songs, and visual works to examine Spain's diverse identities. Key questions include whether Spain can be considered a modern country and how modernity is reflected in its contemporary literary and cultural productions; whether religion remains a defining characteristic of modern Spain; and what non-canonical works reveal about equality and freedom in the country. Topics and literary movements may include the Enlightenment, Romanticism, Realism, Modernism, Generations of ‘98 & ‘27, immigration, and nationalism. Development of critical skills by analyzing diverse cultural forms to understand their historical significance and contemporary relevance. Not for senior majors or students returning from programs abroad. Prerequisite: SPN 22, SPN 23, or instructor permission.
