Latin America: Cultural Perspectives (SPN-0031)

Exploration of the cultural productions that have shaped key moments in the histories of Latin America and the Caribbean, from the early 20th century to the present. Interdisciplinary approach to literary texts, films, songs, and visual works to unpack the complexity of Latin American cultures and their ongoing transformations. Key questions include how identities are constructed and how they relate to literature, film, and the dynamics of cultural production and in what ways artistic movements and popular culture engage with these identities. Topics may include modernity, the Latin American literary boom, authoritarianism, the climate crisis, and indigeneity. Development of critical skills in analyzing diverse cultural forms to understand their historical significance and contemporary relevance. Not for senior majors or students returning from programs abroad. Prerequisite: SPN 22, SPN 23, or instructor permission.
