Latin America: Colonial (Dis)encounters (SPN-0033)

Cultural, social, and political transformations from pre-Hispanic civilizations to the late 19th Century. Focus on colonial and post-colonial materials to explore how colonial legacies continue to shape our contemporary world. Topics may include indigenous worldviews, (often violent) encounters between European and Native American cultures, the imposition and adaptation of colonial structures, slavery and its legacies, evangelization and syncretism, and literature's role in shaping and challenging colonial ideologies. Analysis of historical objects, connecting them to contemporary issues, to understand the ongoing relevance of colonial histories in modern societies. Development of cultural literacy skills by analyzing diverse forms to appreciate their historical significance and interconnectedness. Not for senior majors or students returning from programs abroad. Prerequisite: SPN 22, SPN 23, or instructor permission.
