Beyond the Studio: Collab & Participatory Art (VMS-0121)

Histories of art since the inception of happenings and performance art in the 1960s, when practices expanded beyond the traditional studio; and subsequent developments which have enriched the 21st century art worlds. Readings, research, and writing assignments investigate movements, artists, and motivations that mobilized the shift towards immersion, participation, community-building, activism, and social engagement. Visits to local museums and public art projects complement in-class activities. Culminates in a collaborative research and community-based art project, designed and implemented by teams of students. Recommendations: Prior enrollment in an HAA and/or VMS course.
