Liquidities: Art & Water, 1800-Present (VMS-0123)

Assess modern and contemporary artists who work with water as a subject, medium, and metaphor. Case studies examine the oceanic sublime; natural history and oceanography in art; water security and Indigenous water sovereignty; wetlands and shoreline ecotones; hydro-feminism and the hydrocommons; queer aquatic ecologies; globalization and sea level rise; the gyre and water contamination; the art of whaling, fisheries and aquaculture; and sites of labor and leisure at the water's edge. Recommendations: Prior enrollment in an HAA and/or VMS course.
