Chinese Legend and Fantasy (CHNS-0071)

Introduction to the legends, tales, and fantasy of Chinese literature and culture from the 8th century to the present across genres, including short stories, chapter novels, fictions, and films. Examination of how these stories reflect the interactions between animals and humans, transformations of body and soul, and supernatural force and enlightenment. Exploration of the historical development of representations of the body, sexuality, gender, and aesthetics in Chinese narrative traditions. Taught in English.
