Gender, Conflict, and Humanitarian Crises (DHP-D232)
Fall 2026 · DHP D232 · Tufts University · 3 credits · Undergraduate
This course explores the gendered dimensions of armed conflict. It investigates civilian experiences of violence and displacement, as well as international and national humanitarian, legal, and military responses to conflict through gender-informed analytical frameworks. Students will engage with gender analyses of contemporary trends in armed conflict and terrorism; international humanitarian and human rights law; and the intersections among war economies, globalization, and “new wars.” The course also examines how gender roles and identities are manipulated to sustain violence, the participation of women and men in armed insurgencies, the impacts of conflict on livelihoods, masculinities in wartime, and the prevalence and politics of sexual and gender-based violence. Attention is given to gendered approaches to humanitarian action, non-violent resistance, and peacebuilding. Drawing on case studies from recent and ongoing conflicts around the world, the course bridges analytical, policy, and programmatic perspectives.
