Qualitative and Mixed Methods (DHP-D244)
Fall 2026 · DHP D244 · Tufts University · 3 credits · Undergraduate
This course is an introduction to mixed-method research in the social sciences with an emphasis on how to use qualitative methods for causal inference. Mixed-method research design involves more than simply combining qualitative and quantitative tools. The sum needs to be greater than the parts. We will learn the logic of how to effectively leverage the strengths and weaknesses of each set of tools to maximize inference to important real-world questions. We will cover the nuts and bolts of specific qualitative tools, from case studies to interviews to historical process-tracing, but with a consistent focus on how each tool can be used to strengthen research design when combined with quantitative tools.
