Values Based Leadership (DHP-D287)

This course will challenge students to examine and reflect upon their own leadership experiences and aspirations through various lenses, including academic research, historical examples of effective (and ineffective) public leadership and an exploration of public leadership skills and personal qualities associated with organizational success. The class will emphasize discussion, group work and the application of the readings to real-life scenarios in the participants’ and professors’ fields of service. Topics will include: models of public leadership and influence, critical thinking and decision-making, working in teams, harnessing inspiration and creativity, recognizing and managing risk, aligning budgets with strategy and values and effective management styles. The final project will focus on the creation of a Personal Leadership Portfolio (PLP), including a statement of leadership values and philosophy, decision-making framework, auto-ethnography and goals for leadership development.
