Art / Archives / AI (DIG-0182)

Fall 2026 · DIG 0182 · Tufts University · 4 credits · Undergraduate

Studio/seminar course explores forgotten archives and hidden datasets as critical sites of artistic inquiry. By addressing both the archive and the dataset as technologies of power, it considers art's potential to propose counter-histories and new poetics of redress. Key topics include: feminist shadow archives (Halberstam), archives of feelings (Cvetkovich), critical fabulation (Hartman), Afro-fabulation (Nyong’o), AI data bias (Crawford). Technical workshops (video/editing/coding), and in-depth analysis of relevant case studies and theoretical texts (critical theory, queer, postcolonial, and critical race studies) will provide students with the necessary skills and intellectual understanding to develop their own archive/dataset-based artworks. Non-SMFA students and MAT Art Education students will receive a letter grade.
