Prosthetics and Orthotics (DPT-0520)

This course provides a foundation for decision making and interprofessional practice relating to the recommendation for and use/modification of orthoses and prostheses in physical therapy practice. Concepts of orthotic and prosthetic device materials, design, fabrication, and technology are introduced. Students will apply the patient management model when working with patients who use orthotic or prosthetic devices. Principles of gait analysis, limb amputation, wearing/fitting of orthoses and prostheses, education, the importance of therapeutic alliance and interprofessional collaboration, and the psychosocial considerations of the patient with orthotic and prosthetic devices are implicit in this course.
