Caves to Cathedrals: Great Monuments from the Stone Age to the Middle Ages (HAA-0001)
Fall 2026 · HAA 0001 · Tufts University · 3 credits · Undergraduate
Disciplinary practices and goals of art history via encounters with select great monuments of visual culture ranging from magic-charged cave art of prehistory to compelling Christian, Jewish, and Islamic monuments of medieval life, piety, and power until the 16th century. Placement of art, architecture, and visual culture in dialogue with a cluster of thematically associated creations that enrich our understanding of how art expresses ideas and elicits meanings in its era of production. How to ‘read’ famous images, objects, and monuments across time—as their fame may have the power to produce new meanings in new historical contexts.
