International Law and Humanitarian Assistance (ILO-L236M)
Fall 2026 · ILO L236M · Tufts University · 1.5 credits · Undergraduate
This course provides the basic introduction to international law and the international legal system as a foundation for understanding the international regulation of humanitarian assistance. It is aimed at developing an understanding of the overall structure and processes of public international law and of the political contexts within which international law operates. It will examine foundational concepts and frameworks, including the nature and structure of the international legal system, sources of international law, the law of treaties, and international legal personhood (with a focus on states). It will then provide an overview of three substantive areas of international law – the jus ad bellum (the rules regulating recourse to the use of armed force), the jus in bello (the law of armed conflict, aka international humanitarian law), and international human rights law.
