Examination of the effect of culture and social systems as contextual influences on individuals’ realities and the values and behavioral adaptation they develop. Development of awareness and knowledge about one's own cultural background, identity and related experiences as critical influences on the study of and interactions with others. Focus on critical awareness and cultural responsiveness in the context of research and professional practice. Learning built around an experiential component (e.g. awareness of self and others); and a component focused on theory, concepts, research, and practice. Topics include: historical legacies of oppression and how culture has been influenced over time; ability to study phenomena and deliver services among different cultural groups; operationalization of constructs; selection of measures; quantitative and qualitative approaches such as assessment and intervention; and implications for cultural sensitivity in crisis management and prepared leadership.
