Music in religious and spiritual practices from around 1350-1650, with an emphasis on the francophone world. Musical composition and performance in sacred, ceremonial, and devotional spheres; music as magic and medicine; sonic symbols, riddles, and enigmas; controversies over music in the Protestant and Catholic reformations; role of music in the religious wars; music in overseas missionization; development of music printing and its relationship to manuscript culture. Features rare books held in Tufts Special Collections and tools from the digital humanities. No prerequisites.
