Mixed Methods Research (NUTR-0311)
Fall 2026 · NUTR 0311 · Tufts University · 3 credits · Undergraduate
This course provides an introduction to and overview of mixed methods research to students who are already familiar with quantitative and qualitative research to focus learning on how qualitative and quantitative data can be mixed. This introduction consists of defining mixed methods research and describing the philosophical foundations and evolution of this relatively new form of research. We will then examine the types of mixed methods designs available, discussing the process of research as it relates to each of these designs. The course emphasizes practical skills in research design, data collection, analysis, integration, interpretation, and critical analysis. Through applied readings, methodological critiques, and hands-on assignments such as the preparation of a mixed methods proposal, students will learn how to justify the use of rigorous mixed methods research and effectively communicate mixed methods findings to academic, policy, and practitioner audiences to affect positive changes.
