Advanced Data Analysis (NUTR-ON394)

Fall 2026 · NUTR ON394 · Tufts University · 3 credits · Undergraduate

This project-based course in advanced data analysis capitalizes on student interests to formulate research questions and find answers by examining relevant data sources. We focus on understanding data limitations, conducting multi-stage data analysis, and utilizing proper data flow, analysis, and visualization tools. This course invites to explore current issues in research design, the scientific method, data quality and validity, data management, and research ethics in data analysis. Students will learn about modern analytical methods and techniques essential for data analysis in a range of disciplines such as Climate, Environment, Nutrition, and Health. This course has a special focus on timeseries analysis also covers current issues in research design, the scientific method, data quality and validity, data management, and research ethics in data analysis. Designated time outside of the classroom is required for each student to work with the team partner to provide and receive feedback on homework assignments. This course was developed as part of the NSF-funded study SOLSTICE (PI – Naumova) and now incorporates essential components of the SOLSTICE approach, including proposed and tested rubrics, homework assignment templates, and a gradual development of a student-initiated semester-long research project. The findings of this study and students’ feedback were valuable for improving graduate training in data-rich disciplines. This semester-long course spanning 14 weeks utilizes a mix of prerecorded lectures, online discussions with invited guests, web-based activities, and individual student-led projects presented as part of the mid-term and final examination.
