Black, White, Grey: Intro to Analog Photography (PHT-0113)

Fall 2026 · PHT 0113 · Tufts University · 4 credits · Undergraduate

Introduction to manually controlled 35mm cameras, film exposure and development, and darkroom printing. Assignments, lectures, readings, critiques, and demonstrations explore varied approaches to photography and its relationship to other graphic media. Principles may be applied to other lens-based technologies, such as digital photography, video, and moving film. Students must provide their own film and photo paper. Students ideally have their own manually controllable SLR camera (not a point-and-shoot). A limited number of cameras are available for students who do not own one. Non-SMFA students and MAT Art Education students will receive a letter grade.
