Modern Ukraine: Identity, Democracy, Society (PS-0131)

Analysis of political developments in contemporary Ukraine, using major theories and concepts in comparative politics. Issues such as nation- and state-building, democratization and post-socialist market reforms, memory politics, mass mobilization, and war as a driver of political and social change since 2014. Focus on post-1991 Ukraine, with attention to earlier periods of imperial and Soviet rule, especially in the 20th century. Ukraine’s domestic politics and society, historical and contemporary relations with Russia, causes and consequences of the Russo-Ukrainian war, and Ukraine’s enduring significance for European and global order.
