Cultivating Ecologies in Art (VMS-0127)

Production of a project through in-class workshops, culminating in a class screening at the end of the semester. Co-taught course focuses on how producers of art and visual culture across disciplines have envisioned relational interdependence between humans and the plant and animal worlds via case studies in historical and contemporary art. Considers global climate and local eco-systemic change; ties between social, economic, racial and environmental justice; biodiversity and preservation efforts; inter-species agency; and histories of extractive agriculture as well as artist-led efforts towards systemic change. Open to all levels.
