Talk Less, Listen More: Understanding Personal & Population Perspectives Through Qualitative Methods (CMPH-0380)

Spring 2027 · CMPH 0380 · Tufts University · 1.5 credits · Undergraduate

This course prepares future physician leaders to use qualitative methods to understand the needs and experiences of individuals and communities and to apply those insights to the design, implementation, evaluation, and improvement of health services and public health programs. Through learning how to gather and analyze stakeholder perspectives, students will develop skills for identifying barriers to service utilization, understanding community priorities, evaluating program implementation, and designing interventions that are acceptable, accessible, and effective. Emphasis is placed on the gathering and application of qualitative data to better decision-making in public health practice and as part of health services research, program evaluation, and health system improvement. Examples will mostly draw on research done outside the USA, to emphasize understanding unfamiliar perspectives such as those of immigrants. However, the course is intended to be of use for students working with any different or unfamiliar population. This course will be offered in-person, over 3 full days (Friday, Saturday, and Sunday) in a workshop format. All students, including Maine-track students, are required to attend in-person.
