Foundations for Machine Learning (CS-0035)

Spring 2027 · CS 0035 · Tufts University · 3 credits · Undergraduate

Mathematical and programming fundamentals of machine learning (ML), with examples from various applications. Regression analysis techniques and classification approaches. Mathematics of gradient methods and considerations when modeling data using probability distributions including (but not limited to) Normal distributions. Deep learning methods using neural network models, including modern transformer techniques. Working with the full ML pipeline: the handling of varying data types; model building and model validation; and the analysis of model results. Social and ethical issues associated with system explainability, fairness in ML, and data privacy concerns.
