21st Century Intelligence and National Security Seminar (DHP-P265)

Spring 2027 · DHP P265 · Tufts University · 3 credits · Undergraduate

This seminar on intelligence in the 21st century is designed to give students a sophisticated grounding in what intelligence is, what it is not, and how it is changing rapidly. The focus will be on intelligence in the national security context, but the curriculum is relevant to anyone who in their professional lives will gather, assess, and convey information and insight to others--which is to say almost every professional setting. The seminar will convey the key functions of intelligence, including collection, analysis, counterintelligence, covert action, and paramilitary operations. At the same time, the class will attempt to bust the many myths surrounding intelligence—sustained by inaccurate portrayals of the business in popular culture. The instruction and readings will place special emphasis on how intelligence functions have played out in the real-world of US foreign and national security decision making. The seminar will be enhanced by outside experts who will speak directly about their professional experiences in intelligence.
