Identity Politics of East Asia (DHP-P279)
Spring 2027 · DHP P279 · Tufts University · 3 credits · Undergraduate
As the axis of global competition shifts eastward, understanding East Asia is ever more important. East Asia is a region that defies many expectations. Remarkable post-war developmental trajectories co-exist with thriving democracies and stable autocracies in neighboring states. The premise of this course is that you cannot get East Asia right without understanding its identity politics: how countries in the region think of their national identity, define their national interest, narrate their past, and imagine their future place in the world. We will explore how identity issues condition cooperation and conflict in the region, shaping everything from diplomacy, military strategy, party politics, democracy, and development. New and seasoned students of East Asia will walk away with a more nuanced understanding of what drives East Asian politics.
