Literature Of The American Sixties (ENG-0041)

Spring 2027 · ENG 0041 · Tufts University · 3 credits · Undergraduate

Interdisciplinary examination of literature produced in and about the American Sixties. Readings associated with the Beat and Black Arts movements, New Journalism, second-wave feminism, anti-war activism, psychedelic and blues-folk poetry, and popular culture. Attention to experimentation with literary forms, the incorporation of non-literary discourses, and connections among literature, music, and other arts. Comparative reading of seemingly disparate works, including SCUM Manifesto, Soul on Ice, The Whole Earth Catalog, Play It as It Lays, The Bluest Eye, In Cold Blood, and The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test. Exploration of how these works challenge familiar interpretations of the period and how their formal and narrative innovations helped shape contemporary autofiction and writing concerned with identity. Authors may include Thomas Pynchon, Bob Dylan, Joan Didion, Chuang Hua, Alice Walker, and Toni Morrison.
