Spring 2027 · FMS 0070 · Tufts University · 3 credits · Undergraduate
Humor as both entertainment and critique across Francophone stand-up, film, television, comics, and digital culture, from café-théâtre and political satire to roasts, Netflix specials and online memes. How comedy challenges, reinforces, or plays with social norms around class, gender, sexuality, race, and postcolonial belonging; the controversies it sparks over cancel culture, censorship, and freedom of expression, and the shifting line between satire and offense. The role of media industries, platforms, and audiences in shaping comic voices, with particular attention to contrasts between Francophone and U.S. contexts. Analysis of comedy as a cultural form that reflects and reshapes debates about power, identity, and spectatorship. In English.
