Critical Evaluation of the Clinical Literature (MBS-0228)
Spring 2027 · MBS 0228 · Tufts University · 1.5 credits · Undergraduate
Modern medicine increasingly relies on sophisticated treatments and evidence-based decision-making. Whether evaluating novel therapeutics or identifying risk factors for disease prevention, stakeholders, including providers and policy makers, must be able to critically assess published evidence. In this journal club-style course, students will read and engage in guided discussions of a range of scientific and clinical literature, including basic science papers, clinical trials, metanalyses, and more. The course may include guest lectures covering a range of research topics, followed by journal club sessions in which students critically discuss papers relevant to these topics. Students will develop skills in evaluating study design, interpreting data, and understanding the broader context of research findings. Students will also develop their research presentation skills through leading a class discussion of a selected journal article. Specific topics covered will vary each year but will always include a range of different fields.
