Immunotherapy of Cancer and Autoimmune Disease (MBS-0231)

Spring 2027 · MBS 0231 · Tufts University · 1.5 credits · Undergraduate

In the last few years we have seen a revolution in the treatment of cancer and autoimmune diseases - we cannot turn on the television or open a magazine or newspaper without seeing an ad for some new medication to treat a specific cancer or autoimmune disease. The reasons for this revolution in clinical treatment are clear - advances in “immunotherapy”: the manipulation of some component or arm of the immune response to treat disease. What are these advances? This course will explore this new and exciting area, relevant to both cancer and autoimmunity, discussing topics that include CAR-T cells and other T-cell products, therapeutic antibodies, and vaccines to prevent and treat cancer. The goal of this course is to show that the principles that underlie the successful use of immunotherapy are an extension of the basic immunological concepts taught to students in their first-year immunology course.
