Rigging and Performance (MDIA-0152)

Spring 2027 · MDIA 0152 · Tufts University · 4 credits · Undergraduate

Explores rigging as a creative and technical foundation for animation in Adobe After Effects. Learn how to build flexible control systems that support expressive and efficient movement for characters, objects, and machines. Through hands-on projects, design and rig 2D characters, mechanical elements, and cameras. Topics include performance-based animation such as walk cycles and lip syncing; motion for objects and camera based off of hierarchical parenting, controllers, automated keyframe interpolation, through the use of industry-standard plugins: Joystick and DUIK. Focus on building intuitive animation controls to create rigs that support ease of movement, clarity of expression, and the possibility of experimentation. Non-SMFA students and MAT Art Education students will receive a letter grade.
