Settling Scores: Screen Music Theory and Analysis (MUS-0192)

Analytical approaches to music in film, television, music video, and video games. Traditional methods (tonal design, thematic structure, topic theory) alongside recent perspectives (transformational harmony, timbre, rhythm and meter, embodiment). Audiovisual scores, leitmotif and memory, trailer music, film scores in concert, and interactivity and player agency in game music. Emphasis on transcription by ear and development of original analytical methodologies. Recommendations: MUS 0012 or 0017, graduate standing, or instructor consent.
