Mental Health Law and Policy (PH-0264)

Spring 2027 · PH 0264 · Tufts University · 1.5 credits · Undergraduate

This course examines the legal and policy frameworks that govern mental health in the United States, viewed through a public health lens. We treat mental illness not only as a clinical condition but as a population-health problem shaped by constitutional doctrine, statutes, financing rules, and institutions. Over seven weeks, the course moves from the constitutional foundations of state intervention - civil commitment, involuntary treatment, and capacity - through the laws that determine access to care, disability rights, the criminal legal system, and contemporary crisis-system reform.
